Take the pressure off your party with a few simple steps – and celebrate in style!
The pressure to throw the perfect party is immense – but putting the focus on fun, rather than perfection – will mean that everyone’s too busy enjoying themselves to notice the hiccups only you would spot, anyway!
Nuts & Bolts
The venue for your party plays a big role in setting the tone – but there’s no need to splash out on a plush pad when you can work with what you have, for almost any occasion. Take a look around your space and consider what your guests will see. If you’re lucky enough to have wrap-around 360-degree views from an urban rooftop, you probably don’t have anything to worry about. But it’s also easy to make the best of whatever you have to work with, with careful consideration.
Will your guests be looking out over your complex’s rubbish receptacles? Or into a boring wall? Screening is a great way to add a bit of colour, and help you hide the scenery you don’t want to invite to your party. Think draping, potted plants or flowers – just to draw the eye away from anything potentially unsightly.
Also – clean! Is there mildew in the shower? Do the windows need to be washed? Think of all the areas your guests will visit in your home and address minor issues to ensure a comfy experience for everyone.
Seating is a party make-or-break – put everyone in a long line and it’s impossible to have a conversation, and group people in the round and everyone could end up staring at each other.
Provide several different options, which guests can explore throughout – a casual perching spot, a chat corner with a group of chairs, and play with cushions to provide comfy lounging spots – and a pop of colour.
Colourful & Classy
Oddly enough, matching your menu and your décor is a top tip. If you’re going for a Mexican Fiesta with piled platters of bright food, don’t opt for muted colours – commit! Going for slickly-plated fine dining? Think seasonal colours and sharp décor to match the presentation on the plate.
Lighting is also important – nobody and nothing looks good under neon strip-lighting. Scatter some candles if it matches the mood, to add a glow. If you’re using an outside area, hang electric paper lanterns or strands of fairylights to cover ‘dead’ areas or highlight details.
Ever walked into a party and instantly felt a little awkward? Apart from misunderstanding – or disregarding – the dress code, the reason is most likely that there isn’t any music playing in the background.
Music sets the tone for any event – even if it’s in the background and not designed to get people dancing. Match your playlist to the different parts of the evening, varying tempos and even styles, to add an extra layer of sophistication.
