Kathryn shares her 5 top home décor trends for 2019
If I had to choose my career over again it would most certainly be something to do with interior décor. I am always delving in to interior magazines, blogs and books, wishing I had a bigger budget to indulge my every décor desire…
But, alas, as a mom my home is decorated with second hand finds, family furniture and items we’ve collected over the years when we had a need or a small amount of money available to spend…
Hardly any of it goes together, but, despite the fact that it is not perfect, it is our family home and a space we all love retreating to at the end of every day.
A family home is just that – part of the family. A safe space that is comfortable and reassuring to all the people who call it home. That being said, it doesn’t have to lack style… even when you’re on a budget.
I’m always keen to find ways to update the décor in our space without spending too much money so when I recently popped in at Decorex and did a bit of research into the top décor trends of 2019. I decided to focus in on the ones I felt would be affordable and achievable for the average mom! Below are my favourite affordable décor trends that anyone can achieve on a budget…
1. Sustainable Products
With the environment suffering a major crisis, décor choices leave little to no impact on the planet and its resources is critical. Choosing to purchase products that are sustainable is the way of the future. Being purposeful about purchasing is one of the key trends for almost every industry.
Asking “Who are you purchasing from” and “What materials are being used and are they sustainable” are two very key questions in the buying process.
Sustainable products include jute, rice paper and clay which is why we are seeing more of these natural, sustainable materials being used in décor and design.
Another way to make this trend part of your home is buy buying energy-saving appliances or repurposing items you already own instead of throwing them out.
Remember that whatever you bring into your home from now on needs to give back to the planet as much as it can. Choosing to buy less of a better quality is a great way to ensure that your home is stylish and timeless.
2. Going Green
Speaking of going green, after consulting an interior designer on a project for my blog I discovered that one of the easiest and most affordable ways to inject life into a space is with indoor plants!
We incorporated these into both of my kids bedrooms and loved the look so much that we’ve now invested in a few more plants to brighten up the living area too.
Over the past 2 decades we have become a technology-driven society, often neglecting our need for green. This has now led to a greater interest in biophilia which is an emphasis on the relationship between humankind and nature, and the connections between the two.
Bringing the outside in is a great way to reconnect with nature everyday.
3. Nods to Nature
Now it’s not only the addition of plants to a living space that adds a natural element, a big trend this season is to use natural materials as far possible.
Yes, wooden floors are lovely, but they aren’t exactly affordable. So the key is to find other ways to incorporate nature into your home – maybe it’s by using natural materials such as a jute rug or a rattan lampshade, but it could also be incorporate nature motifs into your decor such as woodland creatures, dried flowers or autumnal colours such as hues of berries, bark and bramble.
4. Jewel Hues
Speaking of colours, jewel tones are big this year. Rich and luxurious, this 2019 interior design trend can be accomplished in a few ways; choose one color and incorporate that subtly to blend with existing pieces and décor, or go all out and mix your favorite jewel tones together for a colorful, yet moody design.
Add in an accent or two to see how you like it first. This trend is easy to incorporate with the addition of a bright, bold scatter cushion or pot – for that indoor plant!
Vibrant colours in a neutral space quickly create a focal point for a room. Think peacock blue, brassy gold, bold indigo, emerald green, dark teal, dynamic purple or captivating crimson!
As you get more bold with this look you can begin to play with layers… paints, fabrics, accessories, and rugs in these colours will create drama, and a dash of luxury, to any room!
5. Colourful Kitchens
Keeping things colourful you may have noticed that there is a big swing towards colourful kitchens currently… I picked up on this first by watching Queer Eye which I LOVE for interior decor inspo.
For years, kitchens have been minimalistic, simple, clean, and white – I know mine is! And as lovely as it is, I’m leaning towards the trend of creating a more personalized kitchen space complete with vintage rugs, open cabinets, shelves of cookbooks, displays of dishes in everyday use and even art!
Cabinet colours to explore (and I’m not advocating re-do, rather a re-paint!) include hunter green, deep blue and even, black!
But if making over all your cabinetry is too much to consider right now, why not opt for an easier kitchen trend to add a punch of personality to the heart of your home in the way of a bold new backsplash using graphic tiles, colourful glass or plain old paint.
So those are my Top 5 Decor Trends that moms like me (on a budget) may like to incorporate into their homes this season. I loved researching this topic so much both offline and online that I couldn’t help but put together 5 more trends that I feel will enhance your home this year. And mom’s here’s hoping you get spoilt with something lovely for your home or a voucher to your favourite decor store this Mother’s Day. I know that is a gift I would always welcome with open arms!
