Looking for an unusual outing to celebrate Mother’s Day? Head out on Safari – with Warwick Wines’ own ‘Big Five’.
You could take Mom for a game drive this Mother’s Day – our country is blessed with magnificent sighting opportunities and you could very well spot all Big Five in one day, if you’re extremely lucky. If you want a guarantee, however, book a Warwick Wines ‘Big 5 Vineyard Safari’ and be certain of seeing Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, Merlot and Cabernet Franc ‘in the wild’ – while enjoying a glass of each varietal from Warwick’s cellar, at each stop.
The 30-40 minute tour is led by one of Warwick’s expert guides and you’ll be able to do your spotting – and sipping – from the back of a comfortable Land Rover as you learn about the history of one of South Africa’s most prestigious Estates, as well as the grape varietals which lead its lauded wines. The fun facts will keep the younger ones entertained, while tastings of the wines made from each block of grapes will educate the palates of those old enough to indulge. A real highlight is the breathtaking view from the pinnacle of the Estate, where the ‘Professor Black’ Sauvignon Blanc grapes find their home.
After the Safari, indulge in a pre-booked, catered picnic on Warwick’s kid-friendly Lawns, classical Forest Courtyard, sophisticated Picnic Pods, the breathtaking Penthouse, shaded Deck – or take things up a notch and book out The Boardroom for the whole family to enjoy some time together in the oldest room on the estate.
Know Your History
Warwick was established as the farm ‘De Goede Sukses’ in 1771 and remained so until after the Anglo-Boer War when, in 1902, Colonel William Alexander Gordon, Commanding Officer of the Warwickshire regiment, bought the historic farm and gave it its current name in honour of his regiment.
In 1964, Norma & Stan Ratcliffe acquired the farm and started developing it into a wine estate, planting mainly Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Under Norma’s guidance, Warwick’s wines have won international acclaim for their subtlety and style – never eschewing substance.
In 2017, Warwick was acquired by investment fund Eileses Capital, who have a vision to build the Estate into an even more prominent player on the world stage, while preserving its legacy as one of South Africa’s most-loved properties.
