Design is intelligence made visible
One basic principle of good design is that ‘form follows function’. We explore this concept in jewellery, textiles and cars.
Kristin Weixelbaumer of Black Betty Design weighs in:
“Great design is where form and function meet. It takes two to tango. When it comes to jewellery, the form lies in the beauty of the design and the function lies with how the jewels make the wearer feel. Because everyone is so unique and drawn to different things, design options become almost limitless in this field.”
A marvellous and almost literal example of this is Black Betty’s ‘Ear Candy’ arrangements. Here are her tips to get it just right:
- Mix and match different earring, play with them being asymmetrical
- Try out some earring jackets: also known as earring enhancers, earring jackets are designed to wrap around or dangle from a simple stud earring.
- Play with graphic lines and circles.
Zana Products: tactile textiles
Zana is a Cape Town based textiles business started by mother and daughter team, Robyn & Sue Britz. They founded the business screen-printing in their home garage, and has developed over seven years into a thriving lifestyle business, launching multiple ranges including bags, home decor, accessories, and more, based on their original textile prints.
While they offer a wide range of products, their bags, purses and pouches, beautifully illustrate the idea of form meeting function in design.
Beautiful printed and thoughtfully designed they carry you—and your stuff—through the world with original style and absolute function.
Volvo: vehicle vision
The people at Volvo have a special word for describing the state of form meeting function.
“At Volvo, we have a considered and caring approach to design. We call it omtanke.
Omtanke does more than inspire us to build better cars; it shapes how we see the world. It drives us to solve problems of all shapes and sizes by applying our knowledge and technology in thoughtful, innovative ways.”
Driving their design thinking forward are vehicles such as the dynamic Volvo XC40, the winner of the Wheels Car of Year 2019. Combining intuitive design with ingenious creativity, expressive style and smart technology this luxury Compact SUV is the ultimate expression of classic Scandinavian design principles.
